If you’re a pro baseball fan, the stratospheric ascent of @spencerstrider, starting pitcher for the @braves, undoubtedly hasn’t gone unnoticed. Below is an excerpt from the article on how the principles taught by Dr. Shaffer have helped Strider both on and off the field:
“It’s really hard to evaluate an outing, especially in the moment, without emotion. And if you’re relying on emotion, you’re never going to make a positive or effective adjustment,” Strider said. “Not only has that been big for me in baseball, I think it’s been good for me in my life. Having purpose, having a plan, being detail-oriented, understanding you’re not entitled to success just because you want it, just because you work hard.”

Discerning Between Windmills and Giants
Written by Dr. Brian Selman:
"Look, your worship," said Sancho; "what we see there are not giants but windmills, and what seem to be their arms are the sails that turned by the wind make the millstone go." - Excerpt from Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote
Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote is widely considered a founding work of Western literature. Originally published in two parts (1605 and 1615), Don Quixote remains one of the most-translated books in the world and one of the best-selling novels of all time over 400 years later.
The protagonist, Don Quixote himself, reads so many adventure novels that he loses his mind knighting himself to wander the land in search of adventure. Quixote’s quest, alongside his squire Sancho Panza, aims to both serve his nation and restore chivalry. Don Quixote is quite the character, both literally and figuratively. You might be more familiar with the word “quixotic” as derived from the novel meaning "exceedingly idealistic, unrealistic, and impractical.”
At one point, Don Quixote famously comes across a plain full of windmills he mistakenly perceives to be evil giants. Don Quixote believes it to be his duty to “rid the earth of such a wicked seed.” Sancho tries to convince his master of the truth to no avail. Don Quixote exclaims to Sancho, “It seems to me that you aren’t well-versed in adventures - they are giants; and if you’re afraid, get away from here and start praying while I go into fierce and unequal battle with them.”
It’s often difficult to discern the differences between windmills and giants in our own lives. Having a friend by our side to distinguish between the two can be extremely helpful if we are willing to listen. When we do face difficult challenges, framing the experience as an adventure choosing to ride into “fierce and unequal battle” allows us to bring our best self to the engagement conquering obstacles regardless of real or imagined.

Dr. Brian Selman on a memory from playing on the @alabamafbl team and the impact of thoughtful messaging to build a championship team:
“In 2009, (the Alabama football team) is getting ready to play the University of Florida in the SEC Championship game and this ’09 Florida team (includes) Tim Tebow and Brandon Spikes and they’re being touted as the best college football team ever. They had won the National Championship the year prior, so just two juggernauts getting ready to go at it. Number 1 vs number 2. Friday night before the game we go to the movies and Coach Saban takes us and we put on the movie Miracle, and it’s about the 1980 US hockey team and their upset win over the Soviet Union. The messaging for us then was that we needed to play our best game, believe in each other, and come together. What I always thought was brilliant was that when we beat Florida (in the SEC Championship game), Coach Saban got a two-for-one on the messaging because the 1980 US hockey team had to still go on and beat the Czech Republic to win the gold medal. And so we had to go and do the same thing against Texas, so that level of thoughtfulness just blew me away.”

Dr. Cory Shaffer on the importance of messaging to align the culture and mission for the @oregonfootball team:
“Part of my role has been to help @coachdanlanning with the messaging behind the scenes. What do the guys need to hear this week to play the best football on Saturday and put the best version of Oregon on the field? So really my role is to just think about the messaging and how that messaging can continue to align to the culture and Dan’s vision. All the content we’ve been talking about all year needs to be meshing and flowing together.”

Dr. Milt Lowder on how fortunate the AMPLOS team is to work with excellent college football programs from the most recent episode of #thegrowthprojectpodcast:
“We all have been honored and blessed with the opportunities these coaches have given us to speak to their teams, but they lead the way. Every head coach that we work with has been the supporter and believer in what we provide to the table. And they’ve taken ownership, they put it in their own words and they share the message to the team. These head coaches are focused on the heart and soul of the team.”

Dr. Drew Brannon on appreciating @coachkirbysmart prioritizing investing in the team from the most recent episode of #thegrowthprojectpodcast:
“Every single minute in a game is scrutinized. These head coaches are in short supply when it comes to minutes. We’re having extended conversations every single week with these head coaches, in our respective roles (as sport psychologists and performance coaches). That’s a big deal - they recognize just how powerful (messaging and investing in your team) can be and they’re putting that kind of effort and time into figuring this out.”

Written by Dr. Cory Shaffer:
“Concentrate on what will produce results rather than on the results. Focus on the process not the prize.” - NFL Hall of Fame Coach Bill Walsh
One of the simplest traps that high performers and high achievers can fall into is focusing too much on the outcomes of their endeavors rather than the processes and systems that produce quality results.
Why it matters: If all our attention is consumed by the result, we lose the presence required for high performance. We lose the serenity of the present moment and become distracted by feelings of the future. We lose the attention to detail and standards that yield prolific results. This concept is not new or novel. In 1977, Nike Marketing Director Rob Strasser drafted a memo to company employees with the principles that provided the cultural foundation for the organization (pictured above). Note the final principle on the list: If we do the right things we’ll make money damn near automatic. Nike’s understanding then (and surely to this day) that their business outcomes are a direct result of doing the right things. What are the “right things” in your environment? What processes and systems can you improve, and as a result, get more consistent positive results?

Ritualize to Actualize
Written by Dr. Brian Selman:
James Kerr’s global bestseller, Legacy, unpacks the culture of the winningest sports organization of all time, the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team. Kerr’s book is a practical field guide for leading the life you want.
The All Blacks expertly leverage rituals to connect people to the core narratives of their culture. Owen Eastwood describes culture as “an organism, continually growing and changing. Building trust, developing people, and driving high performance behaviors are never-ending tasks. Rituals are key for reinforcing the emotional glue.” These rituals bolster the culture and reignite collective identity and purpose.
You may be familiar with the All Blacks most famous ritual, the Maori tribal dance known as the haka (pictured above). The All Blacks have performed the haka prior to matches dating back to 1905. The haka allows the All Blacks to reconnect with "the core of their culture, to summon their ancestors to aid them in battle, intimidate their competition, and bond with one another."
We are surrounded by ritual whether we realize it or not. Sports examples are easy. My high school football coach, Buddy Anderson, imbued ritual into everything. Coach Anderson remains one of the winningest high school football coaches in Alabama history. He used the exact same pregame speech from 1978 until his retirement in 2020 (pictured above). Generations of former players in my hometown can recite the rest. Ritual allows us to connect to something way bigger than ourselves.
Rituals actualize belief making them real and tangible. They do not need to be as obvious or demonstrative as the haka. Kerr writes, “Large or small, formal or informal, corporate or creative, personal or professional, conscious or not, rituals continue to recreate meaning and have embedded within them the deep values and purpose of the person, place, or project. They never lose their meaning and the story they tell us about ourselves.” Your morning coffee is a ritual. Pizza night is a ritual. Prayers before meals are a ritual. What are the rituals associated with these roles that allow you to connect to beliefs greater than yourself?
